Olaf Nyeggen, age 87, of Spring Valley, Wis., died Thursday, June 11, 2009, at Potters Country Home at Menomonie, Wis.
Olaf was born Dec. 12, 1921, or as he liked to say "12-12-21," in Spring Lake Township, Pierce County, Wis., to Olaf and Clara (Stein) Nyeggen. He was baptized and confirmed at Spring Lake Lutheran Church and was a lifelong member. The church was an important part of Olaf's life and he served many terms on the church council.
Olaf attended Spring Valley Schools, graduating with the Class of 1939. Olaf "grew up" in a hurry, as he took over the farm at age 14 when his father died. He farmed his entire life in Spring Lake.
Olaf met Agnes Timm, a young lady who worked at Reid's Hatchery in Spring Valley. After delivering many eggs to Reid's Hatchery, he eventually asked Agnes to marry him. They were married Nov. 7, 1953, at St. John's Lutheran Church in Hatchville. Together, they raised five boys.
During the 1960's, Olaf served on the Spring Valley School Board. He loved the farm life and the outdoors. He fished, gardened, and did some woodworking. He loved the birds, except the blue jays and "bully" hummingbirds. He was proud of his sons and enjoyed his grandchildren.
Preceding him in death were his parents; his wife Agnes who died in 1994; and two sisters, Doris Vihus and Marcella Hill.
Survivors include his five sons, Steven Nyeggen and his wife Sandra of Spring Valley, Wis., Ronald Nyeggen and his wife Eva Nyeggen of Ellsworth, Wis., Larry Nyeggen and his wife Angela Nyeggen of Waunakee, Wis., Randy Nyeggen and his wife Kathy of Spring Valley, Wis., Mark Nyeggen and his wife Tracey Nyeggen of Spring Valley, Wis.; six grandchildren, Ryan Nyeggen and Jessica (Colin) Mumford; Bryce and Emily Nyeggen; Skylar and Jaydon Nyeggen; two step grandsons, Ryan and Kyle Fosburgh; sister-in-law, Amanda (Jerry) Gasperlin, St Paul, Minn.; brother-in-law, Curtis Vihus of Batavia, Ill.; many other relatives and friends.
