Panthers to take on Green Bay Notre Dame in D-2 state semifinals
Ellsworth's opponent in the upcoming WIAA State High School Baseball Tournament was finally determined yesterday.
The No. 6 ranked Panthers will take on Green Bay Notre Dame at 6 p.m. in the Division 2 state semifinals. No. 2 Lodi and No. 7 Waupun will play in the other semifinal contest, which will start approximately at 8 p.m. at Fox Cities Stadium in Appleton.
Notre Dame topped defending sectional champion Fox Valley Lutheran in the sectional finals last night by a 5-4 score. Rain had stretched the tournament out for the past three days and the field conditions in Denmark were so poor the tournament had to be moved to Luxemburg-Casco's field for its completion yesterday.
Notre Dame had beaten Mosinee 6-2 in the sectional semifinals Tuesday but had to wait until Thursday evening to play the finals.
The Tritons are 13-10 overall but they are the only Division 2 school in their conference, the Fox River Classic Conference, which consists of schools from Green Bay, the Green Bay suburbs, Sheboygan and Manitowoc. Notre Dame went 6-9 in league play this season but 7-1 outside of it.
Like Ellsworth, this will be Notre Dame's second appearance in the state tournament as they won their first sectional title since 2011.
