Penalty points cost Cudd state title
MADISON - River Falls' Logan Cudd was ahead of Hartland Arrowhead's Adam Yde 5-1 at point of the Division 1, 125-pound final at the WIAA State Individual Wrestling Tournament. But a pair of of penalty points in the third period cost Cudd the state title in a 6-5 loss Saturday evening at the Kohl Center.
Cudd scored a takedown in the first period to lead 3-1 and extended the lead to 5-1 after another takedown in the second.
But Yde escaped from Cudd and then scored a takedown of his own to make the score 5-4 at the end of the second. Yde rode out Cudd through the entire third period and the referee called two stalling penalties on Cudd, resulting in two straight points and a 6-5 win.
"We talked to Logan after the match and we know Yde is a tough rider," River Falls head coach Brady Cudd said. "It's a 50-50 call either way and comes down to the referee's judgement."
Cudd, a senior, finishes his final prep season with a record of 38-2.
