People come from far and wide to Ellsworth to polka
By walking through the Pierce County Fairgrounds last week, two things jump out.
One is the quantity of campers/motor homes and the second is seeing license plates of different states such as Oregon, Missouri, Colorado, South Dakota, Minnesota and Iowa.
They all came for one reason.
"We all love to dance," said Audrey Boss, of Cloquet, Minn., who has been coming to Ellsworth for its annual Polka Fest for nearly the last 15 years. This year's version was the 33rd edition.
"We enjoy old-time music and love to dance," said Tom Elsen from Coon Valley. "My wife (Diane) and I grew up on it and we stayed with it from that time on."
They're not alone.
Marv and Marge Reimers from Walcott, Ia., have attended the Polka Fest for nearly 30 years.
"We love the hospitality and the top notch bands," Marge explained. The pair was with a group of 12 enjoying local food from Pizza Man in Ellsworth.
"The music, the campground and no mosquitoes," said Roger and Joyce Trost from Lake of the Ozarks, Mo. The pair has attended about the last 10 Polka Fests.
Dave and Cheri Greger from California, who were at Polka Fest as representatives for Cloud Nine Dance Shoes, said they started coming to Ellsworth based off of feedback they got from the Southwest Polka Festival in Las Vegas.
"We met a lot of people there who said they're coming here," Cheri said. The 2008 edition was the couple's second Polka Fest. "We really enjoyed it last year."
