Pierce County 4-Hers dominate in llama judging at Chippewa Falls
Pierce County 4-Hers dominated the llama judging at the Northern Wisconsin State Fair in Chippewa Falls earlier this month.
Eleven 4-Hers from Pierce had their llamas judged, according to Norris Berg of Ellsworth, who along with his wife Kay are Pierce project leaders. The youths were paid premiums and earned ribbons. The Ellsworth Order of the Eastern Star chapter covered their entry fees through that organization's youth program.
"We use the Chippewa Falls fair as a preparatory show for the one here," Berg said Thursday, referring to the youth and their llamas' involvement in the Pierce County Fair, coming up Aug. 7-10. These 11 and 20-some others are expected to join in the fair at Ellsworth, he added.
Six places are awarded in each of seven categories at Chippewa Falls, he said. In two of those categories, Pierce 4-Hers took all six and, in another one, they took five. The judges there are Alpaca and Llama Association-trained.
"It was a good year," he said, noting the Bergs have been going with llamas to that fair for at least 10 years.
