Pierce County awash in road work after summer flood

Into each life, a little rain must fall.

That's how the old saying goes, but when the rainfall is more than a little, there can be complications.

Take the Pierce County Highway Department and its road construction schedule, for example. Highway Commissioner Chad Johnson said Friday several of the road projects which were to have been done last summer got delayed due to August flooding on the county's east side. So they have been rescheduled for this summer, in turn delaying some others expected for this year to next year.

"It's like dominoes," Johnson said.

Department crews became busy with repairs resulting from the Aug. 13 flood and were planning to resume the road jobs later last construction season, he said. However, as the foliage came off the trees last fall, more flood damage was exposed, forcing them to continue those repairs until the freeze-up.
