PIERCE COUNTY BASKETBALL ROUND-UP: SV boys bounce back, Ellsworth boys win
After a pair of tough losses to No. 5 Elk Mound and Colfax, Spring Valley High School's boys basketball team took out its frustrations on Elmwood Friday evening, winning overwhelmingly 62-16 at Spring Valley.
The Cardinals led 44-10 at halftime and were eld in scoring by a season-high 19 points for Ben Becker and 13 for Zac Webster. Levi Wolf led Elmwood in scoring with seven points.
Speaking of Elk Mound, the Mounders defeated Plum City 66-35 at home Friday to clinch a tie for the Dunn-St. Croix Conference title, its second in a row. EM led 40-17 at halftime. Nash Gilles led PC in scoring with 11 points.
Ellsworth won its fourth straight contest, edging St. Croix Falls 65-62 in a non-conference game at St. Croix Falls. The Panthers had three players in double figures led by 19 points by Will Huppert, 18 for Chrystian Kulow and 13 for Kyle Murphy. Ellsworth is at Prescott for Tuesday's big game in the Middle Border Conference.
In girls' basketball action over the weekend, Prescott's bid to go over the .500 mark was thwarted by Somerset Friday. The Spartans topped the Cardinals 49-28 at Prescott. Meanwhile, Ellsworth dropped a pair of weekend games, losing 61-42 at Durand and 78-56 to Menomonie. Kelsey Betthauser led EHS in scoring in both contests, scoring 21 vs. Durand and 27 vs. Menomonie.
