Red Wing officers -- assisted by the Southeast Minnesota Gang and Narcotics Task Force, Goodhue County Emergency Response Team and Pierce County deputies -- served a search warrant at 2649 Malmquist Ave. at about 9 a.m. after receiving a tip about a felon in possession of firearms.

Chief Roger Pohlman said the department had gotten a tip that Javad Khan was seen shooting firearms. Pohlman said the number of agencies on scene was standard procedure for the situation.

"(It's) the danger," he said. "You've got a felon with a possible automatic firearm."

Khan was not at the residence during the search. When the bomb squad arrived, they determined that the suspected pipe bomb was actually not explosive, but a device used in the manufacturing of controlled substances.

Officers also located a significant amount of ammunition, firearm magazines, a significant amount of marijuana, baggies containing pills and more than $8,000 in cash in the residence. In addition, officers recovered two semi-automatic handguns from a separate residence upon consent of the resident. All items were confiscated and placed in evidence, Pohlman said.

Khan was arrested Friday afternoon when he showed up at the Department of Corrections Probation Office for his scheduled appointment with his probation officer, Pohlman said. He was booked into Goodhue County Jail on charges of felon in possession of a firearm and fifth-degree drug possession.

Formal charges are pending, Pohlman said.
