Plenty of county athletes in state track meet
LA CROSSE - Pierce County's contingent of prep athletes would dwarf all others as one team competing at the nation's oldest high school state track and field meet this weekend.
The meet at UW-La Crosse's Veterans Memorial Stadium begins Friday morning at 9:25 a.m. Division 2 and 3 athletes will compete Friday morning in both finals and preliminary events. ll three divisions will compete at the same time Saturday starting 9:25 a.m. as well.
Ellsworth will have just two competitors at state this spring. Senior Alex Campbell will compete in the triple jump and Brett Freier will take part in both hurdle runs. Both will be competing Friday.
Prescott will have a sizeable contingent in La Crosse. In the girls' meet senior Victoria Simones will run the 800 and 1600-meter races Friday and will be with teammates senior Emily Bayer, sophomore Amanda Murphy and freshman Annika Carlson in the 3200-meter relay which will be run Saturday morning starting at 10:30 a.m.
Prescott's boys' team will have quartets in three relay races which all be run in Friday's prelims. This includes the 3200 (juniors Troy Urman and Jack Geiger and seniors Cole Hauenstein and Zach Sobolewski); the 1600 (Hauenstein, Geiger, junior Pat Ballosh and senior Sam Smith) and the 800 (Geiger, Ballosh, senior Harry Cutler and senior Alex Brunner). Also on Friday Smith will be running in the prelims in the 200 and the 400. On Saturday, Hauenstein will run in the 800 and senior Nick Jacobsen will compete in the shot put.
The Spring Valley boys' team will be led by junior Zac Webster in all three jumping events. Webster will compete Friday in the high jump and then on Saturday in the long and triple jumps. Also in La Crosse for SV is junior Tyler O'Keefe, running Friday in the 400-meter dash prelims, senior Julian Manley, running Friday in the 3200 and Saturday in the 1600 and the Cardinals' 1600-meter relay team will also compete in the prelims Friday. Team members are freshmen Devin Larson and Jacob Reilly, O'Keefe and Webster.
Like Webster, Spring Valley senior Breanna Colbenson will also be in multiple state events. She'll run in the 1600 on Friday and the 3200 Saturday and also compete in the 3200-meter relay Saturday along with teammates senior Riley Bowman, junior Emma Gaustad and sophomore Sara King. King will run in the 800 on Friday as will sophomore Sam O'Brien in the 100-meter dash prelims.
Elmwood/Plum City's boys will be represented by senior Seth Jones in the 400-meter dash along with their sectional champion 1600-meter relay team of seniors Jones and Kyle Webb along with freshman Hogan Kernstock and sophomore Tristan Bagley. EPC's 3200-meter relay team of Jones, Webb, freshman Hunter Schoengarth and sophomore Peter Fenter will also be there running Friday.
EPC's girls will have three relays at state led by their sectional champion 800-meter team of seniors Jessica Olson and Marah Boyer, junior Sarah Gilles and sophomore Kaitlyn Lee. The 3200-meter team of Lee, junior Elaina Danzinger, senior Heather Von Holtum and freshman Libby Feuker will compete on Saturday. The 1600-meter team of Gilles, Danzinger, Von Holtum and Boyer will run prelims Friday. Danzinger will also compete in the 800-meter run Friday and Gilles will run in the 300-meter low hurdles prelims Friday as well.
