Plum City baseball team wins regional opener, Elmwood eliminated
Plum City High School's baseball team won its WIAA Division 4 regional first round contest over Clear Lake 12-2 in six innings yesterday in Clear Lake.
However, PC's fellow Pierce County D-4 team Elmwood, was beaten in eight innings by Glenwood City at home by a 5-4 score.
Plum City scored a run in every inning, including three in the top of the sixth which ended the game early by 10-run rule.
Ben Funk, Anthony Ebensperger and Chris Longsdorf all had two hits for PC. Funk and teammates Austin Coss and Dylan Hovland all had two RBIs. Winning pitcher Coss struck out nine batters.
The Blue Devils are the No. 5 seed in the regional tournamet bracket and they'll take on the No. 1 seed, Alma/Pepin, today in Alma.
No. 3 seeded Elmwood had its season finished by No. 6 seed Glenwood City. The Raiders looked in good shape after scoring three runs in the bottom of the fifth led by Travis Joyce's RBI-single and a two-RBI triple by Levi Wolf. But GC tied the game with a pair of runs in the sixth and scored the winning run in the eighth. Joyce and teammate Noah Wells both had two hits. Elmwood was hurt by seven committed errors in the ballgame. GC goes on to play No. 2 seed Prairie Farm today in Prairie Farm.
Other regional semifinal games today have No. 5 Altoona at No. 1 Ellsworth in Division 2, No. 6 Baldwin-Woodville at No. 2 seeded Prescott in the same D-2 regional tour nament bracket and No. 3 Eau Claire Regis at No. 2 Spring Valley in Division 3. The regional championship games are set for Friday.
