Popping balloons brings out police lockdown to WTC campus
LA CROSSE - Nervous students were evacuated and police officers armed with assault rifles took up defensive positions at Western Technical College Thursday.
They had received a 911 call about shots being fired in the Coleman Center on the La Crosse campus. Police rushed inside the building with weapons drawn and searched room-by-room. Pretty soon they realized it was a false alarm. Students in one of the rooms had been popping balloons as part of a class project.
Both police and college officials said the response was appropriate to the information reported.
