Prescott boys hoops wins regional title, Ellsworth loses in OT
The Prescott High School boys basketball team won its second WIAA regional tournament in three seasons Saturday evening as they downed Barron at home 55-45 in a Division 3 contest.
After a tight first quarter, PHS pulled away from the Golden Bears, 18-6 overall, during the second and once again used its defense to maintain the lead in the second half. For the eighth time in 10 games the Cardinals held an opponent below 50 points.
Prescott, 20-3 overall, will square off with Somerset, 21-3, for the third time this season Thursday in New Richmond. Tip-off is at 7 p.m. The two teams split during the regular season with Prescott the first match-up 57-45 and Spartans winning the second 58-40. PHS is the only Wisconsin team to beat Somerset this season as two of the Spartans' losses came to Minnesota teams, Totino-Grace and Tartan.
Somerset won their regional title at Ellsworth's expense Saturday evening in Somerset. Ellsworth rallied from a seven-point defeicit to start the third quarter at 46-39 to tie the score at 60-60 at the end of regulation. But the Panthers had nothing left for the extra session as SHS outscored them 18-4 for a 78-64 win. Kyle Murphy led the Panthers in scoring with 19 points and Emery Whalen finished with 13. EHS concludes its season at 12-9 overall.
