Prescott edges RF 3-2, to play C-CV squad which routed Ellsworth
Prescott advanced to the semifinals of the the 66th Wisconsin Baseball Association State Tournament by beating the host team, River Falls, 3-2 at First National Bank Park Friday evening.
The Pirates played another game of stingy defense. They gave up 11 hits to the Fighting Fish but allow only two runs to cross homeplate. Travis Nubeck was the winning pitcher.
Prescott had six hits in the game. Jared Powell led the Pirates with a solo home run in the fourth inning.
Prescott, 22-5 overall, will take on Chaseburg-Coon Valley, 35-9, in the semifinals Saturday afternoon at 4 p.m. in River Falls. Chaseburg-Coon Valley routed Ellsworth 13-1 in eight innings Friday in Ellsworth.
The Blues hit four home runs. C-CV had two solo shots in the first inning by Jordan Greeland and Travis Check for a 2-0 lead. DH Tyler Ihrke belted a three-run shot in the sixth to make the game 6-1. C-CV scored a run in the seventh on a SAC fly by Check and then plated six more runs in the eighth as the Hubbers' pitching and defense fell apart. Check hit his second homer of the ballgame, a three-run blast into left, to end the contest by 10-run rule. He had five RBIs and scored three runs. The Hubbers made several mistakes in the field which also hurt their cause. Ben Levandowski was the winning pitcher, throwing eight innings.
Sean Cory hit a solo home run for the Hubs' in the second inning to keep the score close for a while. He had two hits while Jake Betthauser, Jordan Zimmer, Lance Murphy and Britton Wolf also had hits. Zimmer's hit in the second inning plus an error by the leftfielder looked like it would score Betthauser. But he was held up at third coming from first base rather than risk the throw to homeplate for a potential put out.
The Hubbers finish with a 17-9 overall record.
Tomorrow's WBA action begins at 10 a.m. with the quarterfinal contets between Brill and Whittelsey. LaCrescent, Minn. and the Haugen Knights play in the other quarterfinal contest Saturday.
