Prescott, Ellsworth boys hoops teams compete in regional finals tonight
Prescott and Ellsworth boys basketball teams could be a collision course for a third time but to do so they have to win their respective regional final game this evening. Tip-off time for both games is at 7 p.m.
Ellsworth, 12-8 overall, will be at Somerset (19-3) while Prescott (19-3) hosts Barron (18-5) in Division 3 regional final contests. The will meet in the sectional semifinals next Thursday in New Richmond.
Ellsworth has lost twice to Somerset this season, 70-67 and 57-45. Obviously Somerset's top scorer, Gaelin Elmore was a big reason for those losses but Somerset's guards, Heaven Hunt and Brady Emmert, are also a big part of the Spartans' success and for the Panthers to win they must control them, both in scoring and rebounding. If EHS can get the job done its due to a reinvigorating win over Maple Northwestern in the regional semifinal which broke a three-game losing streak.
Prescott's win over Amery last night was the seventh time in the last nine games where PHS held their opponents under 50 points. The Cardinals will be facing a Barron squad which was the regular season champion of the Heart O'North Conference. The Golden Bears are led in scoring and rebounding by 6-5 sophomore forward Rece Dietrich. Barron can match PHS's tall front line with 6-7 senior center Jaren Paulson. Senior guard Jason Balts is also in double figures in scoring at 13 per game. Barron lost its first three game but have gone 18-2 since then with their only losses to Somerset 51-48 and Altoona 63-57.
