Prescott girls aim to get above .500 mark

The Prescott High School girls basketball team looks to go above the .500 mark for the first time this season with a pair of weekend ballgames.

PHS, 7-8 overall, hosts river rival Hastings this evening and will also be home Friday evening against Somerset.  Both games will tip-off at 7:30 p.m.

After a pair of closes Middle Border Conference losses to No. 5 ranked Baldwin-Woodville and Amery, the Cardinals have rolled to three-straight wins, including Tuesday's 46-33 triumph over Ellsworth at home.

The Cardinals are finally putting a productive offense with the stingy defense they've been consistent with. PHS center Elle Boles, who finished with 12 points in the Ellsworth contest, credits hard work and practice for the improvement.

"We're shooting the ball better because we're calmer and not as rushed when we put up shots," Boles said, "and I believe that's due to better passing and getting into position where we have open looks for shots and good shot opportunities to take."

Other girls games Thursday evening are being played in the Dunn-St. Croix Conference. Spring Valley will look to bounce back from a close loss to Elk Mound against a Plum City squad looking to snap a three-game losing streak. The game will take place in Plum City. The Blue Devils won in Spring Valley back in December 58-40. Also in action is Elmwood, hosting Mondovi.

Thursday was a popular night for rescheduled boys basketball contests. Ellsworth hosts Osceola, Elmwood is at St. Croix Central with a good chance of making it two D-SC wins in a row and Spring Valley is at Colfax.

Also playing on Friday in girls basketball besides Prescott is Ellsworth as they travel to Durand. The Panthers will close a busy week of hoops with a non-conference game at home vs. Menomonie, 1-13 overall, on Saturday, which tips-off at 7:30 p.m.

Ellsworth's boys team will also be in action Friday at St. Croix Falls, 11-5 overall. In Friday's local D-SC contests: Elmwood will be at Spring Valley and Plum City will be at No. 5 Elk Mound. Girls' Basketball Coaches' State Rankings: Boys' Basketball Coaches' State Rankings:
