Prescott girls' basketball team wins in regional tournament

PRESCOTT - The Prescott High School girls' basketball team was the only one in Pierce County to win their first round, WIAA regional tournament contest Tuesday evening.

The Cardinals outlasted Spooner 47-43 to get back to the .500 mark at 11-11 overall.

The Rails, 8-12 overall, tied the score early in the fourth quarter at 33-33 but PHS outscored them 14-4 for the remainder of the game. Much of that margin was created at the free-throw line. Prescott made 12 free throws in the final quater. Point guard Katy Syverson made six of them and finished with a team-best 15 points. Olivia Rohl scored nine points for the Cards' and teammate Mariah Krings finished with seven points. Spooner guard Sara Taylor led all scorers with 17 points.

Prescott, the No. 7 seed in the Division 3 tournament advances to play No. 2 seeded Hayward, 19-2 overall, Friday in Hayward.
