According to , two U.S. Navy sailors sustained gunshot wounds at Camp Covington in Santa Rita and were rushed to Naval Hospital, where Krutke's son, Petty Officer 2nd Class Jared Krutke, 25, was pronounced dead. The other sailor remained in critical condition late last week. A third sailor was taken into custody in connection with the shooting.

Additional information states all three sailors were part of the same unit, Naval Mobile Construction Battalion 74, based on Camp Covington, according to U.S. Navy spokesman Lt. Donnell Evans. The unit was deployed to Guam from Gulfport, Miss., to provide "responsive military construction support to Navy, Marine Corps and other forces in military operations," Evans added. The sailors arrived in October and were scheduled to leave in April.

The news reached Prescott Thursday morning (their time), where Acting Police Chief Mike Bondarenko told the Kiwanis Club. The chief said that, if anyone would like to send a card or note to Gary, they could send it to the department, located at 1601 Pine St., and they will make sure Gary gets them.

A memorial service was scheduled for 2 p.m. (Guam time) Tuesday afternoon for Krutke. He will then be buried in Sheboygan County.
