PRESCOTT - Other Middle Border Conference clubs have struggled against non-conference competition, but not Prescott.

The Cardinals 3-1 record against opponents outside the MBC (PHS only loss was to Elk Mound) includes wins over Hastings, Cannon Falls and Osseo-Fairchild. These three wins along with three league wins over Baldwin-Woodville, Osceola and Amery have PHS atop the MBC in the state coaches' poll.

Prescott comes in at No. 10 in the polls and head coach Nick Johnson says its large due to balance on offense.

"The thing which comes most easy for us this season sos far has having multiple scorers," Johnson said. "Clay (Seifert) and Mike (Brookshaw) take up a lot of attention from our opponents and that's left opportunities for Charlie (Tayson), Marty (Harris) and Alex (Helmer) to score in double figures too."

This was evident in the Cards' latest win, 54-37 at Osceola Tuesday. Brookshaw scored 16 points and Seifert 15 points but Harris and Tayson were able to contribute six points and big center Joe Haas had his best game so far with seven points down low.

PHS's defense kept the Chieftains from having anyone in double figures and they outscored Osceola 28-11 in the second half.

"If we can have better communication and not give up easy baskets, we'll get better on defense," Johnson said. "And if we do that we're going to be a tough team to beat down the road."

Prescott is back in non-conference action Tuesday when the Cardinal hosts Eau Claire Regis. Tip-off is at 7:30 at The Nest.

Ellsworth's boys' basketball team will try to keep pace with the Cardinals Friday as they host Amery in a doubleheader with the EHS' girls team. The Ellsworth girls are looking for theri first win as is Prescott, which hosts Osceola Friday. EHS's girls team begins their game at 6 p.m. with the boys' to follow in the new gymnasium.

All the Dunn-St. Croix boys hoops' teams play this evening with Spring Valley hosting Boyceville, Plum City at Glenwood City and Elmwood at Colfax. The D-SC girls play Friday with Spring Valley going for its second straight win as they host Plum City, which is also trying to get its first "W". Elmwood is at St. Croix Central.  Valley's Zac Webster is the leading scorer in the Dunn-St. Croix averaging over 20 points per game.

Spring Valley became the first PCH area girls' hoops team to get a win this season 57-29 over Elmwood Tuesday. The Cardinals will need to use the defense they had in Elmwood to stop Plum City sophomore Cheyanne Catura, who now leads the D-SC in scoring, averaging 16 points per game.
