RED WING - Red Wing got a spot on the national stage Friday when CNBC, a business-focused news network out of New Jersey, broadcast live from downtown.

The network was doing a story on how the national debt crisis is affecting towns across the country.

"We wanted to look at how an all-American town is feeling the impact," said CNBC producer Jessica Golden.

So how did Red Wing catch the attention of CNBC? Golden said they focused their search on the Midwest. Her boss had heard of Red Wing before and mentioned that the town might be what Golden was looking for.

"I went online and it was beautiful," she said.

In addition, Golden said the community's large number of retirees and tourism industry would allow them to investigate the impact of the debt crisis from different angles.

Correspondent Mary Thompson reported from the corner of Bush and Third streets Friday morning and early afternoon. The segments were part of CNBC's shows "The Call" and "Power Lunch."

Each segment also included interviews with local business owners, including Bill Hanisch of Hanisch Bakery; Michael Collins, president and CEO of First State Bank; and Tom Wither's of Josephsons Clothing Store.

Mayor Dennis Egan was also interviewed for the piece.

Each segment lasted about two minutes.

"I think it's great exposure for Red Wing," Chamber of Commerce President Patty Brown said. "I'm glad to see them choose one of our businesses to speak with."

Golden said she was pleased with the choice of Red Wing as well.

"It was even cuter than I expected," she said. "I love it."
