Retiring Ellsworth Police Chief started career in law enforcement early

As a police officer in his hometown, Greg Place was not only well acquainted with his "beat," but was following a family precedent.

Place said his father, Pernell, had also been an officer for the Village of Ellsworth in the early 1960s.

"But it was a lot different then," the son said Tuesday, "I think they may have been called constables."

Nonetheless, the pattern was set. Thirty-eight years after Place held his first job in law enforcement, the present Ellsworth Police Chief will retire from that position next month.
