SAGE partially saved by Ellsworth School Board, Title I favored at PV

Believing the difference in student numbers doesn't outweigh the importance of Title I services there, the Ellsworth School Board voted Monday to eliminate the Student Achievement Guarantee in Education (SAGE) program at Prairie View Elementary School.

In taking the action, the board also retained SAGE at Hillcrest Elementary School, kept Title I at Prairie View as it's been and added two half-time aides to kindergarten at that school.

Several board members felt the latest class size projections for Prairie View of 20.5 in kindergarten, 20.3 in first grade, 21.5 in second grade and 21.5 in third grade weren't sufficiently greater than those which would be achieved if SAGE was continued. Meantime, had SAGE indeed been retained at Prairie View, approximately one-third of its Title I services would have had to be transferred to Hillcrest under state regulations. That's because Prairie View hasn't had a sufficient number of families qualifying for free and reduced-price meals, a factor in an arrangement the state calls "supplanting," which tops other considerations.
