SCAM ALERT- Phone scam targets computer users
RED WING - Red Wing Police on Monday warned residents to be aware of a telephone scam involving callers impersonating Microsoft employees who attempt to gain access to people's computers.
The warning was prompted by a Red Wing woman who received a call Saturday from a man claiming he was from Microsoft. The caller told the woman her computer was sending the company virus and registry information and that he could "remedy" the situation.
The woman, who happens to work as a technology specialist, asked the caller questions specific to her computer. The caller was unable to correctly answer the questions and hung up.
According to Microsoft and other reports, the scam has become a regular international scam. The callers' apparent goal is to get users to log in to their computers, and then take them to a website that allows an external connection to harvest personal information from computers.
