Schmidt fell in love with math during his youth
Chuck Schmidt got a sampling of the adult world at an early age.
He was given the job at his father's oil delivering company of computing the bill on deliveries in the first grade - without the help of calculators, which weren't around then.
"My Dad trusted me enough to put it on the invoice," he said.
That started his interest in mathematics and after that, he was hooked.
"I was always good at Math and Science and I wanted to do something with it," he said. "Instead of being an engineer, I went into teaching."
Schmidt has only had one teaching job - 32 years in the Ellsworth School District as a Junior High/High School Mathematics teacher. There won't be a 33rd as he announced his retirement, effective once this school year ends.
