Season begins for Pierce County prep linksters

CLIFTON - The season started for Pierce County's prep golfers last week.

And the start was slow.

The best showing either Ellsworth or Prescott had in three meets last week was a scramble meet held at Pheasant Hills Golf Course in Hammond last Thursday. Ellsworth tied for sixth with Mondovi with 80 points while Prescott tied for eighth with Osceola at 85. Ten schools took part and the meet was won by Amery with a score of 71.

Both teams opened their regular seasons April 12 at the Hudson Invitational at the Hudson Golf Course.

The Panthers were sixth in the small school division with an 18-hole score of 405 and Prescott was right behind them in seventh shooting a 424.

Joey Henning has EHS' best score with a 91 followed by Aaron Knutson's 96, a 107 by Zach Lofgren, 111 by Tyler Samuel and a 118 by Austin Manore.

Prescott's Vince Chute shot a 100, Austin Johnson shot a 106, Kyle Lubich 107 and Nick Helberg shot a 111.

Hudson won the large school division with a score of 329 and Osceola was first among the small schools with a 360. The meet medalist was Eau Claire North's Kendal Faanes who shot a 76.

The first Middle Border Conference meets were held Friday. Prescott hosted their own six-school meet and Ellsworth was at Mondovi.

Somerset won at Clifton Highlands with a nine-hole score of 167 followed by New Richmond 171, Durand 178, Baldwin-Woodville 183, Colfax 223 and Prescott 238.

NR's Jake Bourassa was the meet medalist with a score of 36. The Cardinals' scores were Lubich 48, Blake Wuorenma 60, Johnson 62, Ryan DeCamp 68, Alec Hamilton 79.

Ellsworth too, finished sixth in its six-team meet by a single stroke. Osceola won it with a score of 163 followed by Amery 177, Glenwood City 191, St. Croix Central 199, Mondovi 200 and EHS 201.

Osceola's Andy Baehr and Mike Henck tied for first with scores of 36. Ellsworth's scores were Knutson and Henning 46s, Luke Ristow 53, Samuel 56 and Manore 58.

Ellsworth will be at Prescott Tuesday and then the Cardinals will travel to the Ellsworth Country Club for the Panthers' lone home meet of the season this Friday.
