The city of Sheboygan is saying "no" to more than $2 million in federal stimulus cash.

The Common Council voted 8-7 Monday against an offer to take funding to buy five new transit buses for the city.

They would replace five buses that are 20 years old with smaller, air-conditioned vehicles which pollute less.

But opponents said the new buses would be a waste, since many go around town empty all day.

They'd rather see the transit system look for ways to attract more riders. Alderman Jim Gischia said the stimulus funding only would have provided an extra $420,000 anyway.

The rest of the funding would have been available anyway, had the city wanted it.
