Sites narrowed for future jail
Ellsworth Wisconsin 126 S. Chestnut St. 54011

Wednesday's Pierce County Ad Hoc Jail Planning Committee meeting had its moments, to say the least.

The objective of the meeting was to hear Potter Lawson's opinions about the sites the committee had recommended in building the new jail.

Although the goal of this committee was not to pick a site, Potter Lawson's recommendations will go a long way toward where the new jail will be built.

Eric Lawson, President/CEO of Potter Lawson, began the portion of his meeting talking about a rough draft his company had formulated for the jail. The total building, slightly under 44,000 square feet, broke down into three main parts--space for the sheriff's department, jail support/administration and a 50-bed jail.

He first mentioned the West Grove Street location, presently occupied by the Blue Building and the vacant sites. Lawson said the Blue Building would have to move and there would be no room for the courts, an option Potter Lawson was told to consider after the previous meeting.

The next site was the Pierce County Office Building parking lot. Lawson told the committee and those in attendance, if the site was a go, it would have to be multi-story, which is a non-starter for county personnel. On top of that, he said, parking would become an issue.
