Smiths return home to launch Old Man River Pizza Pub in Maiden Rock

Never underestimate the power of being homesick.

After 13 years in Colorado, Jennifer and James Smith wanted to come back home.

The Prairie du Chien native was in Maiden Rock earlier this year on other business when she ran into the owner of the Gypsy Grill Building.

"One thing led to another and here we are," Smith said, sitting in the Old Man River Pizza Pub, in which used to be the Gypsy Grill. The business opened up for the Fall Flood Run Sept. 15, and officially opened Sept. 21.

Ending up in Maiden Rock isn't a complete surprise when you consider Smith and husband James' family history. Smith's grandmother was born and raised in Pepin, but eventually moved to La Crosse. Also, a great-grandfather used to work on the railroad in Maiden Rock. In addition, when James was younger, he used to work the river as a shell harvester.
