Snowmobilers get another chance at county trails
Ellsworth Wisconsin 126 S. Chestnut St. 54011

For the second time this winter season, Pierce County's snowmobile trails were fully open last week.

The trails opened Wednesday after just that portion of the system east of CTH CC had been open. According to County Snowmobile Association President Todd Prissel, the trails were also entirely open from Dec. 29 until Jan. 14.

"The reason we closed them on the 14th was because warmer weather was coming," Prissel said, explaining officials had hoped that warm spell would be relatively short-lived and reopening could happen soon. Instead, there was a rainy period and the reopen had to be delayed until now, he added.

He estimated snow depths last week to be between six and eight inches off of the trails, while there was a three-inch base on the trails, with ice underneath. Snowmobilers can stay updated on the trails' status by calling the county information line at (715) 639-6311; besides announcing the opening Wednesday, a recording stated the stretch between Diamond Bluff and Hager City dead ends at the Trimbelle River due to a bridge closure, and reminded riders to observe the 10 mph speed limit that's posted within municipalities.

"The groomers ran as much as they could when the trails were open before," the president said, remembering a lot of snowmobile traffic then. The grooming machines are presently being kept off the trails until there's more snow depth, he added.
