SPRING VALLEY - The Spring Valley High School baseball team stayed unbeaten by going the distance yesterday afternoon against Elk Mound.

The Cardinals improved to 6-0 overall and in the Dunn-St. Croix Conference Small Division with a 3-2 win over Elk Mound in 11 innings at Syverson Park.

Winning pitcher Zach Newton went nine innings, holding the Mounders to just three hits while striking out eight batters.

Joe Helmer had two hits, including a triple, to lead SV at the plate.

Barring any unforseen losses this week, Spring Valley hopes the win will push them into the top 10 in Division 4. The Cardinals are still honorable mention in the latest Wisconsin Baseball Coaches Association poll.

Spring Valley is back in action this afternoon against Elmwood. First pitch is at 5 p.m. at Syverson Park.
