Spring Valley-Colfax match to decide D-SC volleyball title tonight
Ellsworth Wisconsin 126 S. Chestnut St. 54011

SPRING VALLEY - It's been six years since Pam Meredith left the bench at Spring Valley High School as the Cardinals' head volleyball coach and moved over to Colfax, replaced by her former player and assistant coach Kellie (Keehr) Schlegel.

Even so, Schlgel says there's a different kind of atmopshere whenever the teams play, which they will tonight in Colfax. The match will begin around 7 p.m.

"I learned the game from her and I look up to her, so it's not quite like facing another coach in another match." Schlegel said

Keehr was a sophomore when Meredith became head coach at SV in the fall 1999. She was put into the starting line-up mid-season and helped turn the Cardinal program around, leading them to sectional finals that year. It also began a run of three straight conference and regional titles.

A decade later both teams will clash with the same Dunn-St. Croix Conference title on the line. Valley and Colfax are both 7-1 in league play and it's winner take all.

Other than a hiccup or two, SV has been pretty consistent in their play and 25-7 overall to show for it. The Vikings' overall record is around the .500 largely because they've faced bigger schools and some of the top medium and small schools in the state in weekend tournaments like the SPRAWL, or in Hudson and Altoona, throughout the season.

In league play, SV beat Mondovi while Colfax lost the Buffaloes 3-1. But Colfax beat Elk Mound 3-0 who swept Spring Valley rather easily a month ago.

Colfax's offense is paced by junior Kori Buchanan. She's fourth in the league in kills with 163 (Spring Valley's Emily Boisen is second with 182). Senior Breanna Steen has 92 kills for the Vikes'.  Colfax's top setter is junior Dannielle Dachel who is fourth in the D-SC in assists with 262 (Conference leader Tana O'Keefe of SV has 500 and Plum City's Jillian Holt is third with 434). Dachel's teammate, sophomore Lakken Meredith, is also in the top 10 in the league for assists and has 141. Buchanan is in the top five of the conference in aces with 36 (so is Boisen with 35) and Meredith too is a strong server with 26 aces. Junior Cheyanne Olson is third in the league in solo blocks with 36.

Valley is looking to win its first league title since 2008 while Colfax will aim for its first title since 2010.
