Spring Valley girls take first in Mondovi Invite

MONDOVI - No Breanna Colbenson, no problem.

With the Spring Valley senior sidelined due to a hamstring injury, the Spring Valley High School girls' cross country team displayed the power of their team depth by still winning the team title at the Mondovi Invitational meet last Tuesday.

Even without their best runner Spring Valley still edged out Dunn-St. Croix Conference rival and No. 14 ranked Colfax 34-59 with Melrose-Mindoro third with 83 points, Mondovi 90, Glenwood City 103, St. Croix Central 153, Eau Claire Regis 177, Elk Mound 183 with Whitehall, Independence-Gilmanton, Boyceville and Cochrane-Fountain City all incomplete.

The Cardinals put all five of their scoring runners in the top 15 individually. SV's No. 1-3 runners, Elizabeth Anderson, Sara King and Riley Bowman, placed third through fifth respectively. Their times were 17:07.03; 17:07.09 and 17:09. Valley's Emma Gaustad closely followed in seventh in 17:24 and her teammate Pearl Davis followed-up with a 15th place in 17:54.

Also running for the Cardinals was Brianna Wyss, 32nd in 19:11 and Sophie Koch, 34th in 19:13.

Freshman Dempsey Fogarty of Colfax won the 4000-meter race in 15:46.

Spring Valley's boys' team was also missing its top runner, Lance Snyder. The Cardinals finished 10th with 225 points. Julian Manly led SV with a 34th place showing with a time of 20:31 followed by Justin Ellefson, 45th in 21:14; David Walker, 49th in 21:26, Jacob Richardson 50th in 21:30; Derek Huebel, 59th in 21:51 and Cole Snyder, 72d in 23:09.

No. 8 Colfax won the boys team title with 25 points. Mondovi's own Sasha Maro won the five-thousand meter race in 17:06.

The meet was held at Valley Golf Course in Mondovi where the Dunn-St. Croix meet will be held on Oct. 11.
