Spring Valley/Elmwood wrestlers score 301 to win Northern Badger

RIVER FALLS - The Spring Valley/Elmwood co-op prep wrestling team didn't stumble of ther path they set themselves on to win the Northern Badger Wrestling Classic at River Falls High School.

After taking a big lead in Friday's session, the No. 1 ranked Redbirds continued onward to winning the whole meet title along with the Division 2 crown by amassing 301 points. Boyceville was a distant second with 262 points but the Bulldogs won Division 3.  Host RFHS won the Division 1 title with 207 points.

SVE had 11 of its 14 wrestlers place in the top 12 but just one champion. Freshman Cruze Hurlburt edged one of top wrestlers in the state in St. Croix Falls's Drew Wheeler by a 6-4 score at 120 pounds.

SV/Elmwood did have plenty of third places though: Derek Huebel at 113, Tyler Berg at 126, Jed Schlegel at 145 and Ethan Hofacker at 195. 

Other placewinners for the Redbirds were Andrew Webb, fifth at 106; Logan Newton, ninth at 132; Zach Newton, seventh at 138; Trent Miller, ninth at 152; Kevin Fesenmaier, ninth at 170 and D.J. Wheeler, ninth at heavyweight.

Prescott finished fifth in Division 2 and had six placewinners, led by champion Alex Stuhl at 132. He defeated Rhinelander's Jon Fox by a 9-0 major decision. 

Other placewinners for the Cardinals were Sam Hoopingarner, 12th at 106; Paul Hansen, sixth at 126; Nick Opdahl, ninth at 138; Troy Urman, fifth at 152 and Tyler Miller, seventh at 182.

Prescott hosts a multi-dual meet Friday with River Falls, Durand and Eden Prairie, Minn.  SVE is off until they wrestle Glenwood City on Jan. 9.
