STATE FOOTBALL ROUNDUP: Packers host Seattle tonight; game will be on CBS
GREEN BAY - The Green Bay Packers will host the Seattle Seahawks tonight. It’s their third exhibition game, which means that the starters will most likely play into the second half to build up their endurance for the regular season.
The Packers are 1-1 in the preseason, after beating the Rams in Saint Louis last Saturday night. Seattle is 2-0. Second-year pro Don Barclay will get the start at right tackle, as he tries to win a starting job over Marshall Newhouse. Running back DuJuan Harris will make his pre-season debut, coming off a nagging knee injury. He’s competing with rookie Eddie Lacy as the starting featured back. Both will get heavy doses of a solid Seattle run defense that has only allowed five rushing first downs in their two pre-season contests. Second-year corner Casey Hayward is expected to get about 15 snaps, as he returns from an injured hamstring. The Packers’ kicking competition will continue. Mason Crosby has picked up the pace, amid a steady challenge from newcomer Giorgio Tavecchio. This being the pre-season, former Wisconsin quarterback Russell Wilson is not expected to show a lot of the Seahawks’ read-option offense. Still, rookie corner Micah Hyde can expect to see some different looks from a slot post in Green Bay’s nickel defense.
The high school football season begins tonight in earnest throughout Wisconsin. The season’s first 10 games were played last evening, after teams spent up to two-and-a-half weeks getting ready. The regular season runs for nine weeks before five rounds of playoffs begin on October 25th. Seven schools are defending state titles from a year ago – Hartland Arrowhead, Mequon Homestead, Waukesha Catholic Memorial, Somerset, Amherst, Fond du Lac St. Mary's Springs, and Glenwood City.
The University of Wisconsin football team got a surprise break yesterday, when coach Gary Andersen called off the day’s second practice and took the players swimming on the UW-Madison campus. Some players said the highlight was when Andersen did a belly-flop dive. The day’s only practice was the final one open to reporters, as the Badgers go into game-planning mode for their season opener against Massachusetts at home a week from tomorrow. Third-string quarterback Tanner McEvoy caught a seven-yard touchdown pass from a receiver’s spot. He was an all-state receiver for two years in high school before becoming a quarterback his senior year. McEvoy said he still considers himself a full-time signal-caller – but he’ll happily catch the ball if the coaches want.
