STATE FOOTBALL ROUNDUP: Packers' receiving corps turning into MASH unit
It’s been another rough Training Camp for the Green Bay Packers. Ten players were hurt during the team’s first nine practices, including three starters on offense. Yesterday, we learned that receiver Jordy Nelson would miss the rest of camp after having a surgical procedure on one of his knees. Team officials did not specify the exact problem. General manager Ted Thompson said the operation cleaned up a lingering injury. N-F-L-Dot-Com said it was a minor problem that Nelson had been dealing with since playing in college. Coach Mike McCarthy said the goal is to have Nelson ready for the regular season opener on September eighth at San Francisco. Also, receiver and kick returner Randall Cobb appeared to hurt a shoulder during yesterday’s practice. Again, McCarthy did not say exactly what the problem was. The third starter, left tackle Bryan Bulaga, is apparently out for the year with a torn A-C-L. McCarthy says he won’t make that judgment until Bulaga’s second opinion comes in. A number of back-ups have also been hurt – including running back Alex Green, tight ends Ryan Taylor and Andrew Quarless. Rookie wide-outs Charles Johnson and Kevin Dorsey were hurt on the same day.
Wisconsin football players were given something they didn’t expect when they arrived at pre-season camp last Sunday – I-Pads. Stanford bought the tablets for their players last summer. The U-W paid just over 70-thousand-dollars to buy 130 units for the Badgers. Coach Gary Andersen said there are not many teams which have the technology – and he expects the players to gain an advantage from it. He said they can watch film any time, anywhere to get comfortable with their positions and playbooks – and of course, to scout film from their upcoming opponents. Redshirt freshman center Dan Voltz said he has used his I-Pad to get more acquainted – and more comfortable – with the Badger offense. Voltz says they’ll pay dividends. The Badgers held their second camp practice yesterday. They’ll open the season on August 31st at home against Massachusetts.
