State Sports Roundup: B-W loses in state softball championship game

MADISON - The No. 1 ranked and defending Division 2 WIAA prep softball champion Baldwin-Woodville Blackhawks were upset by New London in yesterday's state championship game 2-1 at Goodman Field on the University of Wisconsin campus.

B-W led 1-0 all the way to the bottom of the seventh when New London's Molly O'Connell blasted a two-RBI double which scored the tying and winning runs. Winning pitcher Shelby Sommers gave up just three hits and three walks to the 'Hawks, who finish 21-4 overall. New London is 17-5.

Wisconsin native Tim Schendel will have to wait one more day to race in Iowa. The DuPont Pioneer 250 was postponed until 10:00 a.m. CST this morning (SUN) because of rain delays. Despite attempts to get the Nationwide Series going with the use of air dryers on the track, officials finally postponed the race at around 9:45 p.m. last night (SAT).

A disappointing finish for University of Wisconsin senior Dorcas Akinniyi at the 2013 NCAA Outdoor Championships. Akinniyi finished 10th place in the heptathlon with 5,629 points, 200 points shy of a fourth consecutive Academic All-American status. Junior teammate Deanna Latham finished 12th with 5,574 points.
