SVE wins Chi-Hi Invite, EHS second at C-I Duals

The No. 1 ranked Spring Valley/Elmwood and Ellsworth High School wrestling teams both compted in tournaments Saturday.

SVE had tournament champions in Derek Huebel at 113 pounds, Cruze Hulrburt at 120, Tyler Berg at 126, Logan Newton at 132, Kevin Fesenmaier at 170 and Ethan Hofacker at 195. The Redbirds scored 236 points, well ahead of runner-up Chippewa Falls's 169 points. SVE 17 place winners in both varsity and JV wrestlers competing unattached.

Ellsworth won all three of its pool dual meets at C-I. The Panthers defeated No. 9 ranked in Minnesota Class AA Perham 41-24, Mora, Minn. 44-25 and North Branch, Minn. 61-13. However Cambridge-Isanti, ranked No. 5 in Minnesota Class AAA, was too much for the Panthers in the first place match, winning 43-12. C-I's Cody Skog, ranked No. 3 in the state of Minnesota, handed EHS's top-ranked Gabe Frandsen his first loss of the season 6-5 at 160 pounds. Logan Kemmerer recorded a pin for Ellsworth at 170 to make the score 24-12 but C-I won all the remaining matches.

Ellsworth's overall dual meet record is 11-2. They host Durand in their final regular season dual meet Thursday.
