SVE's Newton wins spot on awards podium
MADISON - Spring Valley/Elmwood wrestler Zach Newton won a dramatic four overtime victory over Oostburg's Clint Hoftiezer to secure his spot on the awards podium at the WIAA State Wrestling Tournament Friday.
Neither wrestler could score the winning point in the first three extra periods of the Division 3, 145-pound match but in the fourth, Newton was able to escape in the last two seconds after nearly getting a reversal from the down position on the Kohl Center floor.
"Zach is a really good with switches and he able to get clearance from his opponent and that allowed to move and be in control," SVE head coach Carter Turner said. "He nearly had a couple of takedowns too but just couldn't quite get there."
Newton improves to 37-11 overall and will wrestle in the placement matches Saturday morning. Hoftiezer, a senior and sectional champion, lost both his matches at state and finished 30-13 overall.
The win made up for Friday morning's quarterfinal loss to Lancaster's Trenton Cornell (35-6). Newton was blanked by the junior 9-0.
After suffering through so many close losses the last couple weeks, Turner said getting a close win makes an important point for the SVE program through its lone wrestler competing in the state meet.
"It says you can get the job done," Turner said. "Obviously it was our goal to place but it's nice to be get in a way in which a wrestler gets a win when it's close."
