There's only been one Candy: Nelson reflects on horse that she's had for over 30 years
Vicki Nelson has been around horses nearly all her life.
"My first horse was a coal black welsh stallion with white blaze and blue eyes," the lifelong Ellsworth resident explained. "I learned to ride on that little guy and have been riding and showing ever since."
While the fondness for that first horse is still evident in Nelson's voice, years later, another one of Nelson's horses almost brings her to tears.
"I've been around a lot of horses and a lot of foals, but there's only been one Candy," Nelson said, referring to her Appaloosa Mare, who turned 35 years old in May. "She's been like a kid to me," Nelson continued. "She's been with me through everything from getting married to being a grandmother."
Vicki and her husband Gary had just purchased a farm home outside of Ellsworth and they were seeking a good riding horse. The pair visited Jerry Halverson's farm where Vicki first laid eyes on Candy.
"I've always been drawn to the Appaloosa breed due to their loud coat patterns," Vicki explained. "And Candy was a beautiful Mare in her youth."
