Third quarter run powers Ellsworth

The Ellsworth girls basketball team used a 22-0 run to beat St. Croix Central 45-26 Tuesday in Ellsworth.

The Panthers outscored St. Croix Central 20-0 in the third quarter and added a basket in the fourth quarter to end the run en route to a season-opening victory.

"We really played outstanding defense all night long. I think that was the difference," Ellsworth head coach Dave Berg said.

Becca Matzek led the Panthers with 11 points while Tacia and Lydia Kuhl each had seven points.

The Panthers play Thursday at Barron Area.
