And former Governor Thompson got a 57 percent favorable rating, while Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett was second at 29 percent.

St. Norbert College and Wisconsin Public Radio conducted the poll earlier this month.

Thompson, a Republican, spent 14 years as Wisconsin's governor and he left nine years ago to become President Bush's health secretary.

He's said to be thinking about entering the race for governor, or maybe the U.S. Senate race against incumbent Russ Feingold.

Barrett is considering a candidacy for governor as a Democrat, and he won't announce his plans until next month.

Among the announced candidates for governor, Republican Scott Walker has a 26 percent favorable rating. Former GOP Congressman Mark Neumann is at 20 percent.

The poll surveyed 400 Wisconsin adults. The error margin is plus or minus 5 percent.
