Tractor fire scorches shed on Salem farm
SALEM TOWNSHIP--Fire destroyed a tractor and damaged a shed on a farm in Salem Township a week ago Monday.
The Ellsworth Fire Department was called shortly after 6 p.m. to the Ralph Matzek farm, W3171 390th Ave., Maiden Rock, to fight the blaze. A plug-in heater for the 1980 Allis Chalmers diesel tractor may have been the cause, according to a preliminary investigation at the scene.
The fire was mostly extinguished by the time fire fighters arrived and the tractor was removed from the shed, but not before scorching some of the interior structure. No one was injured.
An electrical-type smell had prompted the owner to turn off electrical service to the shed. When the shed door was opened, smoke rolled out.
In another fire for the local department last week, fire fighters were called Friday at 5:46 a.m. to a burning power pole owned by Pierce-Pepin Cooperative Services in Trenton Township. No loss nor damage was recorded in the blaze.
