Tuesday State Sports Briefs: Kohl hopeful new arena for Bucks can be built

MILWAUKEE - Milwaukee Bucks owner Herb Kohl says he hopes a "good, winning" basketball team will be enough to get more people to support a new arena.

The Bucks have had losing seasons for eight of the last nine years - and in the wake of the Great Recession, there's been almost no public appetite to pay for a new facility. Kohl addressed the subject yesterday, after former Atlanta coach Larry Drew was introduced as the Bucks' new head coach. Kohl points out that the Bucks are not the only ones who would benefit from a new arena. He says his team only plays 40-plus-games at home per year, while the facility is used a total of 200 days for other games and concerts. Kohl has promised to contribute toward a new arena, but has not said how much. The Bucks' owner said his team needs to win a playoff series - something it has not done since 2001. Kohl says the key is to put a competitive product on the floor each year. And the owner believes Drew will be a main cog toward achieving that goal.
