UPDATE: Crash claims two lives in Dunn County
A crash Wednesday morning claimed two lives in the town of Elk Mound in Dunn County.
The Dunn County Sheriff's Office reports in a news release, they received a call at 1:24 a.m., of a two-vehicle crash involving a semi-tractor/trailer and a car at the intersection of State Highway 29 and 970th St. in the town of Elk Mound.
Upon deputies' arrival, two of the occupants in the car were pronounced dead at the scene with the other occupant seriously injured. They were identified as Juan Colohua-Cervanes, 29, and Gervasio Cervantes Sanchez, 30. The survivor was transported by ground ambulance to Mayo Eau Claire.
Sheriff Dennis Smith states, upon investigation, a car was crossing Hwy. 29 southbound onto 970th St., when it was struck by the westbound tractor, which was fully loaded. After impact, the semi crossed through the median and eastbound lanes and came to rest in the ditch, south of Hwy. 29.
The semi driver was uninjured and is not suspected of playing a role in the crash. Smith said to prove his role, he voluntarily submitted a blood draw to confirm no alcohol or drugs in his system.
The car occupants, meanwhile, are suspected of consuming alcohol before the crash and were not wearing seatbelts. They were believed to be local farm employees.
Smith concluded by saying the crash is still under investigation and the Wisconsin State Patrol will be reconstructioning the accident. The Sheriff's Office were assisted by Colfax Ambulance, Elk Mound Fire, Mayo Helicopter, Wisconsin State Patrol, Dunn County Medical Examiner and Chippewa County deputies.
