The Pierce County Sheriff's Department released the name Monday morning.

The body was found Saturday morning, Feb. 16, after authorities received a report at 8:20 a.m. that a burned vehicle was spotted at N3530 840th St. in the Town of Trenton. Officers arrived and located the vehicle in an unoccupied farm yard. The fire reportedly occurred overnight.

Matthews was positively identified by the Pierce County medical examiner.

According to Pierce County Investigator Doug Ducklow, Matthews was driving his 1998 Toyota and was on his parents' property where storage buildings are located.

Ducklow said evidence at the scene indicates Matthews was turning his car around when the vehicle became stuck in a snow bank.

Interviews with family members confirm that Matthews would have stayed in the vehicle and waited since temperatures overnight were in the teens, according to Ducklow. At some point, a fire started in the engine compartment, and Matthews never exited the vehicle.

Investigation shows no foul play, said Ducklow.
