Upper Mississippi River barge traffic to resume Friday
ST. PAUL - The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers hopes to have barge traffic moving on the Mississippi River in the next couple of days. Spokesman Paul Machajewski says they hope to have both pools re-opened to navigation traffic by Friday.
The Corps has dredge plans in both areas working diligently in trying to get that to occur. Machajewski says crews have been working around the clock removing large deposits of sediment that accumulated from a late thaw and heavy rains over the spring and summer.
Ten barges can carry the same tonnage as 150 rail cars or 600 semitrailer trucks.
