UW-RF skaters pitch pair of shutouts
Sophomore goaltender Scott Lewan was perfect and eight different Falcons accounted for 10 goals as the UW-River Falls men's hockey team opened the 2011-12 season by sweeping Finlandia, 4-0 and 6-0, last weekend at Hunt Arena.
Lewan made 16 saves Friday night and 21 more Saturday to post his fourth and fifth career shutouts. Seniors Sean Roadhouse and Geoff Shewmake tallied goals each night as the Falcons moved to 2-0-0.
The Falcons will look to remain undefeated when they face off against Hamline University this Friday night at 7:05 p.m. at Hunt Arena. Saturday they host Bethel, also at 7:05 p.m.
Despite outshooting Finlandia 14-2 in the first period last Friday night, the Falcons couldn't find the back of the net until Roadhouse scored just over a minute into the second period, assisted by Jon Schreiner and Justin Brossman.
Shewmake followed after a beautiful set up and assist in front of the net from Jason Yuel to make it a 2-0 game. Yuel received a pass from Alec Hagaman before cutting in front of the net and dumping a pass off to the open Shewmake, who sealed the deal.
Blake Huppert scored his first collegiate goal, on a power play, with 33 seconds remaining in the second period to widen the gap to 3-0. George Malliaras and Brossman earned assists.
Andy Inderieden made the final 4-0 early in the third period, assisted by Ryan Goodmanson and John Bullis. From that point on, the game became a highlight for Lewan as he continued to blank the Lions. UW-RF outshot Finlandia 42-16 in the win.
Saturday night Finlandia narrowed the shots-on-goal gap to 31-21 but UW-RF made the most of its opportunities and Lewan was one again stellar in net in a 6-0 Falcon win.
Alec Hagaman scored a power play goal following a cross-checking penalty against the Lions just 19 seconds into the contest to put UW-RF up 1-0. Bullis and Yuel assisted on the play.
Willie Hess picked up his first collegiate goal midway through the second period to make it a 2-0 game, assisted by Jake Calleja of New Richmond.
Shewmake scored his second goal of the season 31 seconds later, assisted by Malliaras and Brossman, before Roadhouse tallied his second goal of the year at the 15:59 mark, assisted by Brossman.
Yuel and Brossman added goals in the third period to make the final 6-0.
Brossman, last year's Falcon points leader, finished the two-game series with a goal and three assists.
