The award was presented to Petryk -- who represents the 93rd District in the Wisconsin Assembly -- at the VFW’s State Convention recently held in Green Bay. The 93rd District encompasses most of Pierce County as well as parts of Dunn, Pepin and Eau Claire counties.

Petryk serves as chairman of the Assembly Committee on Veterans.

Among his veterans legislative accomplishments, Petryk was a sponsor of two bills that Gov. Scott Walker recently signed into law. One bill would indicate a veteran’s status on a driver’s license or identification card and the other designates Hwy. 128 as the 128th Infantry Memorial Highway.

State Commander Renee Simpson praised Petryk’s efforts on behalf of veterans.

During this session Petryk has sponsored legislation that would allow special registration plates for motorcycles owned or leased by veterans with disabilities; create a veterans-themed lottery game that would change the primary source of funding for the veterans and surviving spouses property tax credit; provide payment of travel expenses of National Guard members on state active duty; allow financial aid for service members and their immediate families; authorize an additional deputy adjutant general in the Department of Military Affairs; create an individual income tax exemption for military income received by active duty members who die in a combat zone; and give free admission to state parks and trails to veterans.

“It is truly my distinct privilege to work in the Assembly as Chairman of the Assembly Committee on Veterans for the betterment of veterans across our great state,” Petryk said.

He said that along with his colleagues on the Veterans Committee, he has worked hard this session to write, promote and pass legislation that will help improve the lives of all current and future veterans in our state.

“To have my work and commitment recognized by the VFW with such a distinguished award is very humbling.  Thank you to the VFW for this esteemed award,” said Petryk.
