Village of Ellsworth issues Emergency Chlorination Notice

The Village of Ellsworth Thursday issued an emergency chlorination notice for its drinking water. 

Public Works Director Greg Engeset explained water samples collected on Monday, Oct. 28, and Wednesday, Oct. 30, indicated the presence of coliform bacteria.  Coliform bacteria are not harmful themselves. Coliforms are bacteria that are naturally present in the environment and are used as an indicator that other potentially-harmful, bacteria may be present. The Village stressed no fecal coliform or E.coli bacteria were found in subsquent testing.

Therefore, as a precautionary measure, any ice cubes, beverages, baby formula, or other food items made with water from Monday through Thursday should be discarded and their containers or icemakers cleaned. 

Engeset said the chlorination will run a minimum of two weeks until the Village has acheived 10 safe samples.

This is the second time in the last two months the Village has issued the notice. The first notice lasted about two weeks as well.
