West CAP marks 46 years of service this month
Throughout May, the spirit of community action will be celebrated in west central Wisconsin as West CAP joins Community Action Agencies across the country to celebrate National Community Action Month.
National Community Action Month highlights Community Action Agencies and their commitment to fighting poverty on the local level.
West CAP's plans to recognize Community Action Month include two open houses and a special annual board meeting.
One open house will be held at the West CAP office on 1421 Stout Road, Menomonie on Monday, May 9 from 3-5 p.m., and the other at the West CAP office on 525 Second Street, Glenwood City, on Wednesday, May 18 from 3-5 p.m.
The open houses will serve as an opportunity for citizens and other agencies to learn about West CAP programs and meet staff.
The annual meeting will be held at 5:30 p.m. Monday, May 9, at Old Towne, 903 Cedar Falls Road in Menomonie.
Client and volunteer recognition awards will be presented at this meeting.
"Our goal for our National Community Action Month events is to highlight the real problems low-income people in west central Wisconsin are facing, especially during these challenging economic times," said Peter Kilde, West CAP Executive Director.
"West CAP is often the first call when families face the kind of serious and unexpected problems that are common in an economic downturn - loss of a job, utility shut-off, lack of housing.
"As a local organization, West CAP is able to respond to their situation and help them develop a plan for a longer term solution. These services provide a path to economic security during difficult times.
"In 2010, West CAP provided services to 7,423 households and received thousands of additional calls for assistance and referrals."
"The economy is on everyone's mind--people want to work, they want to be able to purchase a home and provide for their families. With the economy continuing to veer off course, these basic goals seem illusive and out of reach," said Don Mathis, President and CEO of the Community Action Partnership.
That is why Community Action programs such as West CAP are needed now more than ever. National Community Action Month is our times to showcase our 47-year history helping people achieve economic security amid some of the most dismal circumstances."
