Western Wisconsin News Briefs: Foremost Farms closing cheese plants in western Wisconsin
BARABOO - Baraboo-based Foremost Farms is closing one cheese plant and will idle another Wisconsin operation indefinitely.
The changes will cost 100 workers their jobs. The plant being closed makes mozzarella cheese for food-service markets and is located in Alma Center. A cheddar cheese plant is being idled in Waumandee. Foremost says the moves comes as it is consolidating production into its operations at Appleton, Richland Center, Milan and Marshfield. Despite the reduction workforce, the co-op still plans to produce the same volume of cheese products.
Residences in La Crosse would be provided wheeled carts for their trash and recyclables under a seven-year solid waste services contract being considered. The city council takes up consideration of the plan this week. Harter's Quick Clean-up of La Crosse has been recommended to handle the job. The price tag for about 17 thousand residential sites would be a little less than two million dollars a year. Service would start next year. The council will decide during its budget negotiations on how to pay for the services.
